Russellville gets grant to help with fencing at cemetery

Mayor David Grissom hopes very soon that a new fence will be in place to deter vandals from doing any more damage to one of the city’s oldest cemeteries.

Grissom said the council has been awarded a $2,855 matching grant through the Muscle Shoals Heritage Area that would be used to purchase and erect fencing around Old Town Cemetery on Washington Avenue.

Last year, it was discovered vandals had damaged some of the old historic headstones and grave markers in Sadler Cemetery on Jackson Avenue and Old Town Cemetery.

Local historians said some of the graves in the two cemeteries date back to the 1700s.

“We want to do all we can to help preserve our history and to stop vandals from trying to destroy it,” Grissom said of the 50/50 grant.
