Mayor David Grissom said a promotion encouraging residents to spend money at local businesses can help increase revenue by as much as 60%.

The city council earlier this week approved a resolution promoting “Spend at Least $20 in Russellville Day.”

According to the resolution, “studies have shown that if each person were to spend only $20 at a city of Russellville business on that day, revenue could increase by as much as 60%.”

“This is something that we started years ago with the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce in an effort to encourage everyone to shop local and support our local businesses,” Grissom said.

“The need to promote local businesses became evident with the increase of online shopping,” Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cassie Medley said.

Grissom said “Spend at Least $20 in Russellville Day” is normally on the Friday before Christmas.

“This year, the date is Dec. 20, and we encourage everyone to ‘Spend at least $20 in Russellville’ on that day,” the mayor said.

Grissom said the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and Russellville City School System usually helps promote the event.

“Lots of times, people will send in pictures of them on that day shopping locally where they spent their money,” Grissom said. “It’s great publicity for our businesses.”
