A $463,284 Transportation Alternative Program grant announced by Gov. Kay Ivey will allow the city to replace sidewalks along Washington Avenue, Jackson Avenue and Montgomery Street in downtown Russellville.

The money is part of a statewide $21.6 million TAP grant package announced by the governor and the Alabama Department of Transportation, according to a Transportation Department news release.

“This is something we started years ago,” Russellville Mayor David Grissom said. “We’re very fortunate to be able to redo our sidewalks.”

He said the project primarily involves replacing old sidewalks, but could include some new sidewalk sections.

Grissom said Russellville is providing $115,821 in matching money, for a total project cost of $579,105.

Grissom said the city has completed four TAP grants through the years.

“We’re close to having all our sidewalks in downtown replaced,” he said.

TAP is a federally-funded program administered by ALDOT.

According to the release, the funds will be used to make various on-road and off-road improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized forms of transportation

“For a growing number of Alabamians who walk or use bicycles for health and recreation or to travel to work or school, the safety of their travel routes is an important concern,” Ivey said in the release. “Therefore, I am pleased to join ALDOT in announcing this significant grant to build and enhance sidewalks and walking spaces in more than 30 communities, large and small, spanning the length of our state.”
