Pilgrim’s workers lend a hand with cleanup

More than 130 employees with Pilgrim’s Pride poultry plant in Russellville worked last week with city officials and Franklin County officials doing a variety of projects.

“They have done a little bit of everything from picking up litter to pressure washing and painting,” said Mayor David Grissom. “We have doubled our workforce in the city and got a lot accomplished.”

The large processing plant, which is located just outside of Russellville and employs nearly 1,200, closed for the week to install new equipment.

Instead of being at home for a week without working, Grissom said the plant gave employees the option to do community service.

“Pilgrim’s continued to pay them this week and the company provided their lunch. All we had to do was pick the workers up each morning at the plant and transport them,” Grissom said. “It’s been a win-win for everyone. We got a lot cleaned up, and the employees who participated still got paid.

“We appreciate the local Pilgrim’s plant and the corporate office for making this happen.”
